Beauty Hacks

Finals Week calls for a few beauty hacks that will make your life a little bit easier, because let’s face it, we have more important things to be thinking about…right?

Coconut milk or coconut oil is a great alternative to almost any cream you ran out of! Not only is it great for your dry skin during the Winter months, but it’s also a delicious mask for your hair.

Most of us are a little more pale this time of year, or maybe you accidentally bought the wrong foundation. Adding a little bit of moisturizer will lighten the foundation, better blending it in with your natural skin tone.

Holiday parties usually run late into the evening, so that means we need to make sure we stay smelling good all night! By rubbing vaseline on your pulse points, or anywhere you like to spray your perfume, it will make it last.

Want the matte lip, but don’t have time to go buy the matte stick? Before applying your color, dab on some concealer, or even a white eyeliner/eyeshadow.

All out of dry shampoo? Grab the starch out of your laundry room, and spray away. Works just as well, if not better.

Now, time to get back to the books…

When It Rains…

Rainy Day Style Must Haves

Rainy days usually make me wish I could stay inside all day, and not have to face the unruly weather that messes with my look.

Cute Rain Coat

I used to avoid going outdoors in the rain, and I realized it was partly because I didn’t have the “right” rain gear. The perfect trench coat is a MUST HAVE. I prefer black, but camel tone is a versatile choice too.

Calvin Klein at Macy’s has a good variety of choices.

Cute rain boot

I have never been extremely attracted to the tall rain boot style, which I ignorantly thought was the only rain boot style…until now. Ankle high booties are my favorite length, and Tretorn Plask Mid has just that! Not to mention the irresistible wedge aspect and combined practicality, there is no  reason to hold back.

Defrizz product

Lastly, but arguably the most important item to have readily available for the rainy season, Bb Defrizz. If you have hair like mine, uncontrollable and frizzy when humidity and moisture hit, it’s time to invest in a good product.  Bumble and bumble is a reliable choice– it not only tames your hair, but leaves it shiny and soft too.

The Unconventional School Girl

Remember this?

School Girl Spears

Since it’s Halloween, I’m going to talk about how you can turn a costume into an everyday outfit!

School girl Outfit

Featuring my little sis, it’s easy to see how a few changes can really change EVERYTHING.

School girl Outfit

An outfit needs to have dignity, which means, show some self worth and cover up (a little). You can still show off your legs, just don’t show off everything. Maintaining curiosity is all part of the school girl demeanor. Wear flats, not heals. Keep the pig tails…and you’re ready for class.

For Halloween, it’s ok to go ALL out on make-up. In fact, check out this tutorial by The Western Wild. I LOVE costume make-up. However, switching to everyday mode calls for keeping things clean and simple. Urban Decay Naked 2 is the best natural shadow.

Foggy Fall

Black Hat and Black Sweater

It’s time to pull back out my hat! The foggy city can do wonders to my hair…

Black Sweater, Black Hat, short hair

This hat brings out the preppy side in me, and that’s NOT a bad thing. It’s fun to step out of my comfort zone.

Adding a pop of color to a simple look makes all the difference, and it really helps me feel confident when I’m experimenting with different outfits.

I’m in a Coco Chanel phase right now, so bare with me.

For me, that means bringing out the different sides of myself that I often try to hide…Like bringing back out my favorite hat for the new season. I will not hide beneath the fog.

First thing’s first, my new haircut! Yes, it’s WAY shorter….but I am someone who LOVES to experiment with my hair. So I thought, new season–new hair…I mean, who doesn’t think that way?!

Green Apple Books, The Gospel According to Coco Chanel

My new haircut aside, this weekend I went to Green Apple Books and bought Gone Girl, something I need to read before seeing the movie, and The Gospel According To Coco Chanel!

One of my favorite things to do on a sunny weekend in the city is read in the park, and Dolores Park is the perfect destination. Coco Chanel has amazing life lessons for ALL women and girls! Chapter three is titled, “On Fearlessness” and it begins with a quote from Chanel, “The most courageous act is to think for yourself. Aloud.”

I am constantly working towards finding my own voice, and more importantly, having confidence in my own voice. For me, that means not being afraid to share what I think with the world. Spoiler: It’s way harder than it seems. And what do I do when things are hard?! Read another chapter from The Gospel. In chapter eleven, “On Living Life On Your Own Terms”, I found the solution to my problem.

Long Bob

I recently got a haircut…hoping for the “long bob” style seen above…but unfortunately, it didn’t turn out quite the same…(pics soon to come). However, I would still love to share my styling techniques for the “long bob” hairstyle!

Redken texturizer

All you need are two products. To get the “textured” look, spray Redken Fabricate #03 all over your hair after blow drying. It’s heat activated, so try to spray while your hair is still hot. Then, run your fingers throughout–scrunching and munching until your desired look is achieved.

Redken rough paste

The last product you’ll need is Redken Rough Paste #12. Put a small amount onto the tips of your fingers, then rub through the ends of your hair. This works especially well if your hairstylist used thinning scissors on the ends of your hair to make it look and feel a little bit lighter.

You see? Short hair isn’t as hard to manage as it seems!

Back To Black

So…as we all know…It’s New York Fashion Week…

And as a mere college student living in San Francisco, I thought it quite suitable to play dress up!

Then again, I find it quite suitable to play dress up almost any day of the week!

I hope to one day be able to experience NYFW for myself, but until then, I’ll just have to find ways to add to the fashion spirit from this side of the country!

Is it just me, or is it easier to wear your hair natural when your outfit is a tad on the fancy side? Some might call it backwards, but for some reason, I feel more confident knowing my outfit can stand alone…

And when my outfit speaks for itself, so do I!

Just Around The Corner

Sunnies, OBEY T-Shirt, Circle Scarf, Red Lips

Fall is just around the corner, so let’s talk scarves…

Sunnies, OBEY T-Shirt, Circle Scarf, Red Lips

Technically, it is still summer, but the weather in San Francisco is hard to pinpoint to just one season.

Cathy Jean Booties

Believe it or not, but infinity scarves are my favorite! Despite being warm, they make any average outfit much more stylish. I love to wear them with a T-Shirt, jeans, and booties. Hair up or down– it doesn’t matter!

Fall can carry a bad reputation. I get it!  Who isn’t bummed about summer being over? But as a fashionista, thinking about all of the clothing opportunities in the changing season can make going back to school a little bit easier.

The Messy Bun

How to style a messy bun

The Messy Bun is a simple, yet versatile look– something every fashionista should know how to create.

A Messy Bun

To begin, pull your hair into a ponytail. It works best if your hair is a little dirty and hasn’t been brushed yet.

How to style a messy bun

If you have an old scrunchy, like this one here, it will come in handy. Put your ponytail through the scrunchy, then start wrapping the ponytail around the scrunchy until you have a donut shape.

All that’s left is adding a little hairspray.

Messy Buns are perfect for a special occasion or an active day.
