Whale City Bakery

Back when I was in high school, all I ever wanted was to leave this small town and move to the big city just 70 miles up the coast. After doing just that, all I ever want now is to come back home.

I never realized just how lucky I was to grow up in such a unique niche called Santa Cruz. I was so eager to explore NEW streets, to meet NEW people, and to see NEW things, that I forgot that nothing can truly compare to this place. Maybe everyone feels this way about their home town, though.

Don’t get me wrong–I love San Francisco. But there is something so special about Santa Cruz. For instance, you could never find a place like Whale City Bakery up in the city.

Whale City Bakery is just 10 miles north of town, sitting on Highway 1 in Davenport. Getting there makes for a scenic adventure. Then, once you arrive, you get to sip your coffee while watching the surfers try to catch a wave.

You can choose to grab a killer muffin and coffee to go from the bakery, or sit and take your time while digesting the best blueberry pancakes you’ve ever had.

They also offer healthy items (for those who like that kind of thing).

If you are ever in the area, make sure to stop by. You won’t regret it.

New Year, Same Hat

This is my go-to outfit right now: jeans, booties, sweater (or flannel), bomber, sunnies, and hat.

Each season I find myself gravitating towards a certain silhouette. Though I love experimenting, it is nice to fall back on an outfit that I know will make me feel confident and comfortable all day.

I have been like this forever. I always have a better day when I like my look. For instance, I always make sure to wear my “go-to outfit” on test days. The psychology of fashion is so fascinating, isn’t it?

I am also this way with my hair. Every now and then I will let my natural hair make an appearance, but when I do that I can’t stop fussing with it. When I blow out my hair I don’t have that problem. I feel more like myself. I used to feel ashamed and guilty when I straightened my hair. Friends always made sure to warn me of the damage I was causing and assumed I was trying to hide a part of myself that I was insecure about. But straightening my hair wasn’t about fitting in or hiding something. It was about wearing my hair the way I liked it, and that’s what style is all about.

Has anyone else been wondering what the difference between sweatpants and joggers are? I’m pretty sure the only difference is that joggers are socially acceptable to wear out and about, whereas sweatpants are frowned upon. These are basically the only thing I wore in Disneyland. And yes, I call them joggers.

Something else I can’t stop wearing: this scarf. It’s soft, warm, and burgundy. Need I say more?

I have found the holy grail of skin care products. Tarte’s Maracuja Oil is a miracle. Acne? Cured. Dry skin? Gone. Glowing? Yes. You’re welcome.

I LOVE shoes! I have been collecting them for years. Unfortunately, I find that I don’t end up wearing all of my shoes all of the time. Usually, I cycle through five pairs at a time. Though I love the comfort of having options, I started wondering what it would be like if I only had five pairs in my closet. It got me thinking about shoes more like a staple in my wardrobe, rather than an accessory. So, for fun, I picked out the five pairs of shoes I would own, if I could only own five pairs. These shoes were methodically picked for both functional and fashionable reasons. They can be warn at different occasions and during different seasons, making them extremely versatile. Here they are:

New Year’s Eve is such a fun time to get dressed up. I love to shop for a new dress to wear for the occasion. The best type of dress to invest in is one that you can wear over and over again. A Little Black Dress never goes out of style.

Drugstore Makeup

I have found more often than not that drugstore makeup is incredibly underrated. Here are my favorite drugstore makeup products, all available at Target:

Because I have bad skin, I like the products on my face to be good for it. Both Milani and Physicians Formula do just that. Pairing those products with my Yes to grapefruit CC cream ads just the right amount of coverage, while making sure that my skin is primed, completing any look. None of this would be possible without my favorite brushes by ecotools. They are soft and dense at the same time, something that is hard to master. NYX is a long lasting and pigmented brand–perfect for my lips and brows. L’oreal’s Voluminous mascara is one for the books. Everybody loves this mascara, and the volume is seriously killer. Whenever I wear eyeliner I prefer to use a pot and brush, and Sonia Kashuk’s formula is easy to work with. Maybelline’s Blushed Nudes eyeshadow palette is comparable to Urban Decay’s palettes, which is saying a lot. I have reverted back to these products for years, and don’t think I’ll be stopping any time soon. The prices are unbeatable, and the results are undeniable.

No-Makeup Makeup

On a regular basis, if I’m just going to school or running errands, I don’t like to cake on too many products. Instead, I prefer a much more natural look, using products that won’t irritate my skin. Here is what I use when I am trying to look like I’m not wearing Makeup:

Tarte and bareMinerals are my all time favorite makeup brands. Their products are rid of a lot of the toxic chemicals that are found in most cosmetics. Complexion Rescue has been my go-to cream since Summer. Because I feel more comfortable going out with something on my face, this product is the perfect amount of coverage–light, yet skin perfecting. It goes on great alone, when I want the no-makeup look, or looks great mixed with foundation for a night out. Tarte’s Cheek Stain adds just the right amount of color to make me feel awake. I like to put it on my lips too, but if I know I am going to be out in the sun, I love a tinted lip balm with SPF protection. I have been wearing Neutrogena’s Revitalizing Balm since high school! Tarte’s Double-Ended Contour and Highlighter stick adds just a tad bit of definition, and can also act as a great eyeshadow. One of my favorite things about these products is that they can all be applied just using my fingers.

Sweater or Jacket?

I have been looking everywhere for the perfect sherpa lined denim jacket. Winter has definitely started in San Fransisco, and I realized I don’t have anything that WARM to wear. I’m freezing in the house, and I’m freezing when I leave. Aside from the practical aspect of this piece of outerwear, I have been obsessed with finding this jacket ever since I saw Lorelai Gilmore wearing one:

This jacket was not only the epitome stylish, but also warm enough for the East Coast Winters that Stars Hollow had to bare.

And so, with much research, I found one of my own. Even better than Lorelai’s, I can wear it comfortably indoors because it isn’t actually denim. It is a sweater material that looks like denim! Ever since it arrived on my doorstep last week, there has not been one day that I haven’t been seen living in it:
