Family Candids like It’s 1998

Have you guys noticed the recent hipster trend on social media? You know…the one that makes all of your photos look like they were taken with a disposable camera from the ’90s?

At a recent family get-together, one of my sisters, who is WAY cooler than the rest of us by the way, enlightened me. She showed me the Huji Cam App, immediately made me download it, and a photoshoot quickly ensued.

I was skeptical. As an amateur style blogger who values REAL cameras (both film and digital), the idea of using an app that imitates disposable film didn’t sound appealing.

Nonetheless, when she showed me the “developed” pictures, I was pleasantly surprised. Don’t get me wrong; you won’t find me posting all of my pseudo-fashion shoots from the Huji App, but there is something candid and heartwarming about the pictures from our gathering.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that the App looks and acts like old disposable cameras, meaning you have to take your shot looking through the tiny viewfinder, forced to press the shutter whether or NOT the subjects look absolutely perfect. Things are done with less focus and positioning, and as a result, turn out a little bit more authentic, in real time.

The convenience of having it all on your phone in an instant helps too. Usually I am impatiently waiting on Joel to develop our most recent batch of film, but in those cases, the quality is well worth the wait. My final opinion? The Huji App has a time and a place.

New Year’s Resolutions for 2019

New Year's Resolutions, Santa Cruz Mountains,

Though Santa Cruz was spared during the recent fires that engulfed most of California, I couldn’t help but feel affected by what was happening to my neighbors. When you see friends, family, and strangers lose everything, you can’t help but be reminded of what’s truly important in life.

New Year's Resolutions, Santa Cruz Mountains,

We live in such a fast paced time where we are constantly in a high speed race to get the best job, nicest digs, and start our lives that we forget that our lives have already begun.

New Year's Resolutions, Santa Cruz Mountains,

As one of the girls who is guilty of  spending most of her time obsessing over the finish line rather than the race itself, I have decided that I am going to try to focus on what really matters to me in the present moment over the coming year. Everything else is just icing. Without further ado, here is my mindful New Year’s Resolutions list:

New Year's Resolutions, Santa Cruz Mountains,

Make more time for friends and family

Do something nice for somebody every day

Give back

Travel

Face my fears every chance I get

Work hard

Take care of myself

Be kind

Learn something new every day

Be happy

Berry and Bright

This holiday season I’m ditching a dramatic eye for a bold lip.

holiday, red lip, fall, winter, fashion, makeup, beauty

Not only is this look easier to achieve, but I think it is also appropriate for every occasion–family reunion, corporate holiday party, Christmas moviethon, etc. With a bold lip, you can keep everything else simple and neutral but still look like you put in effort without coming off over the top. My color of choice? Berry. This warm and bright shade is fitting for this time of year, but ultimately, any red will do, as long as it is BOLD.

Moss Landing

Just 30 minutes South of Santa Cruz is beautiful Moss Landing.

With a craving for Phil’s Fish Market, we decided to hop in the car and make the most of our afternoon.

After filling up on artichokes and fish tacos, we went exploring.

As we walked down a secluded path towards the sunset, we paused to take it all in…

Once again, I opted to wear my trusty, new Hunters but this time paired them with a fancier, feminine top. I wasn’t sure if the combo would work but I was pleasantly surprised. That’s what’s so great about these boots—they’re versatile!

Rainy Day Adventures

Hunter Rain Boots, Winter, Rain, Fashion

Rainy season has finally started here in Northern California, and I couldn’t be more ready for a much needed change in my natural world.

The timing is also perfect because Joel surprised me with Hunter rain boots for Christmas! They had been on my wishlist for a long time, and I am so pleased.

The classic yet versatile style and look is unbeatable, and of course, they do a great job of keeping me dry. Now I just need to buy thick, wool socks so I can wear them in the snow.

Meanwhile, I love pairing them with my beloved Lands’ End rain coat. The coat is long and the boots are tall, so I am practically fully covered. Still, the glimpse of color poking through the gap adds a touch of personality to the outfit that makes it not only functional, but really fun.

Joel and I always go for a long drive on the backroads after a heavy rainfall. All of the trees and grass look fresh and renewed….It’s a great way to start off the new year.

I’m so excited for all of the roads I will travel in my new boots and can’t wait to continue sharing the journey.

Hello 2018!

Happy New Year, New Years Eve, 2018, Resolutions, January, New Year, NYE, Winter

2017 is finally over…thank Goodness. I’m beyond ready for a fresh start. 2018 marks the beginning of my adult life. I’m graduated from college and looking for the right career path—wish me luck! Most years I don’t make any legitimate resolutions, but this time I feel inclined to start. Join me in stepping into the New Year on the right foot, with realistic goals to work toward that will improve my quality of life in one way or another. Some are geared towards self-confidence; others focus on the big picture; and a few are small, personal goals I’m passionate about. I’ve come up with 10 resolutions that will make me very happy, even if just one of them comes true.

1.       Eat something green every day.

2.       Wear my natural hair at least every two weeks.

3.       Live in the moment.

4.       Travel somewhere new at every opportunity.

5.       Take better care of my skin.

6.       Finish a minimum of one new book each month.

7.       Cook a meal more than once a week.

8.       Work on my video editing skills.

9.       Find a job I (hopefully) enjoy.

10.   Workout twice a week.

I’m excited to check in this time next year and see what I’ve accomplished. Happy New Year!!!

Winter Beauty Products

I find myself craving moisture more than ever when the weather is cold. My skin is dry, hair is full of static, and lips are cracked. Over the past few years I’ve learned about a few products that always make this time of year more bearable; check them out:

Olay Total Effects Anti-Aging Face Moisturizer: My mom has been using this since I was a kid, and I understand why it’s lasted all these years. She has incredibly dry skin year-round, but this stuff is thick and powerful. After putting this on, my rough and dry patches are less noticeable; plus my makeup goes on smoothly and lasts all day.

Tarte Maracuja Oil: I haven’t done a skin care post without mentioning this holy grail product! It’s magic. I love soaking my face and neck in it before bed and waking up with rejuvenated skin. As someone with combination skin, I suffer from breakouts and dry patches at the same time, but this stuff remedies it better than any other combination of products. It contains maracuja fruit nutrients, like vitamin C and essential fatty acids, that my skin craves.

Aveda Dry Remedy Moisturizing Masque: I have always been a big fan of Aveda’s plant based hair care products and was recently introduced to their masque. Prior to using it, the static in my hair was unmanageable. Now, both my hair and scalp are hydrated and frizz-free. If you’re suffering from dry hair like I was (most curly hair types have a tendency to be dry), I recommend using a moisturizing masque once a week.

Organic Virgin Coconut Oil: If I was stranded on a deserted island and could only bring one beauty product, this would be it. I love putting this on after I shave my legs, or on my hands before bed. It’s also great on wet or dry hair and for healing acne scars…the list could go on forever. I haven’t found a body lotion that can compete with simple, natural, inexpensive coconut oil, and I don’t think I ever will.

Neutrogena Revitalizing Lip Balm: This product has been in every purse I’ve owned since high school. I love the fruity smell, the variety of lip tints, the SPF 20, but most importantly, the long lasting moisturizing effects. It’s an easy, every day step up from regular Chapstick that I never leave the house without.
